Mail art project based at Waygood Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne. Part
of the exhibition “Return To Sender: Questioning Fluxus” Co-ordinated
by Topsy Qu’ret April–July 2004
A new sound work, “Social Capital”, was created for this mail art project. Initially 10 musicians based in
North-East England were asked to contribute work, which was returned by post to the Postal Room at the Gallery.
This work was then sent to one of 10 writers who were invited to respond to the sound work.
The exhibition examined the “Fluxus sensibility”, which could be said to be an attitude of mutuality and community.
Cathode’s work here looks at this idea via the concept of social capital: people’s sense of community, mutual support,
social cohesion, trust and civic participation. The sound work is based on the questions in the Office of National Statistics’
social capital measurement tool.
The writer Margaret Wilkinson wrote a beautiful response to the sound work, called “A Confession”.
The POSTY project is archived here,
on the Waygood Gallery website. Special thanks to Topsy for encouragement
and for co-ordinating this project.
